Iron powder key to advanced chemical solutions

Höganäs wide range of iron powders are used in many chemical processes, from being a catalyst for chemical reactions to adding magnetic properties to paint. Our products also play an important role in recycling industrial chemicals and are utilised in pharmaceutical applications.

Iron powder is used in a wide range of chemical applications thanks to its high surface area, reactivity and as catalyst for chemical reactions.

As a reducing agent in chemical reactions, iron powder is used to reduce nitro compounds to amines. Iron powder works as a cost-effective and selective reducing agent that can tolerate other functional groups. It is used for wastewater treatment to help break down organic pollutants and is also used to remove halogens from organic compounds.

Iron powder acts as a catalyst for synthesis of hydrocarbons from syngas, as a catalyst component in hydrogenation reactions and in synthesis of ammonia.

Iron powder is a key material for water and soil treatment. For environmental remediation, the iron powder removes contaminants such as chlorinated solvents, nitrates, arsenic and chromium (VI). It is also used for removing phosphates in water treatment plants.

Because iron oxidation is an exothermic reaction, it is used in controlled heat-generation systems, such as self-heating food packs. It is suitable for so called hot bags used as air-activated hand and body warmers. The bags produce heat from the exothermic oxidation of iron when exposed to air.

Since iron oxidation requires oxygen, it is extremely effective for iron powder to work as an oxygen absorber, making it valuable in packaging for food preservation and pharmaceuticals.

In electrochemical reactions, iron powder can be an active participant. For iron-air batteries, iron powder serves as the anode material and for hydrogen production systems, iron-based redox cycles are used.

Thanks to its magnetic properties, iron powder is used in the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications, and for magnetorheological fluids used in dampers and robotics. Another area of use is soft-magnetic composites in inductors and transformers. Iron powder is also an additive in paint to provide the featured magnetic properties.

Highly reactive iron powder is used as a catalyst in gas purification, for instance removing sulfur-containing compounds from gas streams, and for generating hydrogen, as iron reacts with steam or acids.

Our high-purity iron powder products such as electrolytic iron powder complies with the food chemical codex (FCC) requirements. Therefore, it can be used in food contact applications, such as equipment manufacturing for food processing. Here, iron powder is used to add metal-detectable features thanks to its high purity and low toxic trace elements such as arsenic, lead and mercury.

All in all, iron powder is widely used in chemical applications as a catalyst for chemical reactions, but also for environmental remediation, heat generation, oxygen absorption, battery systems, magnetic and specialty chemicals. It plays a central role in many industrial chemical processes thanks to its reactivity, affordability and environmental advantages.
