Material selection

Höganäs will assist you in choosing the right Somaloy® material to fulfil the requirements of your specific application. The material selection must take a number of parameters into consideration, among others:

What is the application targeted?
Höganäs proposes different materials to fulfil the requirements in electric motors, fast switching actuators, pulse transformers and inductor cores for power electronics.

What are the operating conditions in the application?
Factors such as frequency and induction level will highly influence the material choice. A material with high resistivity is preferred in order to maintain low eddy-current losses at elevated frequency.

What is the shape of the component?
Is your design taking advantage of the 3D features offered by the Somaloy technology? Is the designed component possible to manufacture, using the powder metallurgy process? A material with high resistivity is preferred in order to maintain low eddy-current losses in large cross-sections.

Are there any specific requirements in terms of mechanical properties?
The Somaloy component may have to fulfil specific mechanical requirements for different reasons: in the application (vibrations, centrifugal forces,…), during handling (transportation,…) or during assembly (winding, over-moulding,…). Some Somaloy materials (3P performance level) have been specifically developed to fulfil high mechanical requirements.
